INDIA STATS : Top 20 Container Cargo Ports in the world

Mumbai : May 18,2012

Containerization has revolutionalized the way international trade is carried out across the world. Today, nearly 90% of non-bulk-cargo world wide is moved by containers stacked on transport ships. 26% of all container transshipment is carried out in China.

Containers are built to standardized dimensions, and can be loaded and unloaded, stacked, transported efficiently over long distances, and transferred from one mode of transport to another—container ships, rail and semi-trailer trucks—without being opened. Containerization has led to greatly reduced transport costs and supported rapid increase in international trade.

India, has however, been slow in catching up with the container revolution. Our biggest port – JNPT in the Mumbai harbour, ranks a distant 26th in the list of largest container ports in the world.

The list of Top 20 container ports is as follows
