AIR’s first DRM Super Power Transmitter inaugurated at Jamnagar

Mumbai/Ahmedabad: September 10, 2012



India’s first 1000 Kw Digital Radio Mondiale-DRM Super Power Transmitter-of All India Radio was dedicated to the Nation at Liyare village in Jamnagar district in Gujarat today.

DRM is a set of digital audio broadcasting technologies designed to fit more channels than AM transmission, into a given bandwidth. It can deliver FM comparable sound quality on frequencies below 30 MHz, which allow for long distance signal propagation.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr.Jawahar Sircar, CEO, Prasar Bharati said All India Radio would install DRM digital technology transmitters at other Stations very soon. He said that this Super Power Transmitter at Jamnagar will also help spread India’s rich culture to our neighbouring countries.

The Jamnagar Super Power Transmitter with DRM technology is capable of broadcasting in DRM, AM and simulcast modes, making it the first of its kind in the country. The entire project was completed at the total cost of Rs 42 crores. The Relay Station will be used by Urdu, Sindhi and Baluchi services of AIR External Services beamed to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and some other Gulf countries in North West direction.
