Excerpts of MoS Ms. Panabaaka Lakshmi's speech at
TECHNOTEX 2013 launch at Mumbai.

Mumbai: September 10,2012

Technotex or Technical Textiles are material products used primarily for their functional properties, which find applications in areas such as agriculture, infrastructure development, food security, etc. and have the potential to bring substantial improvements in the quality of life of every citizen.

Recognising the vast potential for growth and development, a High Level Committee on manufacturing which was chaired by the Hon’ble Prime Minister recognized the importance of technical textiles in the national economy in 2007 itself and its potential for increased production and exports.

In this regard, we have made several efforts towards harnessing the vast potential of this sector, through Scheme for Growth and Development of Technical Textiles (SGDTT) and inclusion of major machinery for technical textiles under modified TUFS for 10% capital subsidy.

Our Ministry also launched the Technology Mission of Technical Textiles for the 2010-11 to 2014-15 period with an outlay of Rs. 200 crore.  The two mini-missions under this scheme focus on the establishment of Centres of Excellence for the technical textiles sector, as well as the provision of market development support to manufacturers and institutional buyers of technical textiles.

Technotex 2013 will focus on a wide range of upcoming and thriving sectors in technical textiles, like, protech, geotech, agrotech, meditech, composites, sporte3ch, indutech, nonwovens, buildtech, clothtech, hometech, mobitech, packtech and so on.

Om the field of building international buyers linkages, we are making concerted efforts towards bringing leading R&D institutions, manufacturers, and buyers from these regions to Technotex 2013, and thereby encourage partnerships and collaborations for mutual benefit and advancement between these entities and their Indian counterparts.  Starting this month the Ministry will also initiate an extensi8ve road-show programme to promote Technotex 2013 across the world.

While government efforts have been significant in promoting this sector, private industry participation and investment, which is the primary objective of Technotex 2013, will provide the necessary impetus for the growth of this sector in India.

While the benefits of technical textiles are widespread across industrial domains and geographic boundaries, development of this sector will also enable us as a nation to address prevailing and prominent issues in infrastructure and economic development, environment protection and presentation, national security and production efficiencies in industrial and agricultural output.
