Nuclear Power generation increase by 23% during 2011-12

Nuclear power generation in the country increased by 23% in 2011-12 over that generated in 2010-11 this was stated by Dr. Ratan Kumar Sinha, Chairman Atomic Energy Commission on the occasion of  BARC Founderís Day at Mumbai today.

 

He said Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited is operating 20 nuclear power  reactors at six different sites and it is currently constructing  six more. The work on prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam  is also progressing well.

 

The work on the construction of the first of the two 1000 MW Light Water Reactors at Kudankulam is also complete.  The operation of unit-1 is expected to commence shortly. 

 

Dr. Sinha also said after Fukushima accident of March 2011 various nations including India has decide to continue with their programme for expansion of nuclear power and safety.  There is a need to involve public to know more about the nuclear project which can be helpful to us for further research and development.

 

He further said that the result of public outreach activities which as implemented by DAE have been received favourably and DAE is  planning to hold a series of media workshops and translate most of the public information related material into regional languages. This will also help in dispelling the myths concerning the harmful effects of radiation.
