FTII  being strongly represented in IFFI

The Film and Television Institute of India, Pune is set to get unprecedented mileage during the International Film Festival of India being held from 20th to 30th November at Panaji, Goa. This is  particularly  significant as the nation is celebrating the centenary of Indian Cinema.

 

Apart from the two diploma films, Afterglow (Kaushal Oza) and Allah is Great (Andrea Iannetta) selected for the non-feature section of Indian Panorama  which will be screened at Inox-II, Old GMC building on 23rd November,  FTII  is having a strong representation in this international event.

 

For the second Consecutive year, IFFI has offered a special section for FTII films. This section will feature five films made during the current year. These films will be screened in 35mm format on 25th November at 5.30 pm. They are: Prabhat Nagari Film 1 (Aman Wadhan), Juju (Sujata Chowdhury), Green Balcony Aunty (Faisal Rahman), Tatpatchat (Vasudev Keluskar) and Tapish (Rakesh Sharma).

 

Besides, GRAFTII, an association of graduates of FTII, have also been   invited by  IFFI to screen a package of FTII films. Accordingly, this section will screen some 55 recent student films. This will include a number of student films which have won accolades at national and international film festivals and similar events, for example, Udedh Bun (Siddhartha Sinha) which has won Silver Bear at the 58th Berlin International Film Festival, 2008,Aadmi ki Aurat Tatha Anya Kahaniyania (Amit Dutta) which was honoured with Special Mention in the competition section of Horizon (Orizzonti Section) - 66th Venice International Film Festival held in September, 2009;Vaishnav Jan Toh... (Kaushal Oza), second year Dialogue exercise, had bagged the Best Student Film, Short Fiction, (Gold) Award of Indian Documentary Producers' Association (IDPA) in 2009 will all be screened

 

Another interesting feature of this Section is prominent films by women students of FTII, like Rizwan (Deepti Khurana) which  has won Special Jury Mention at 5th International Short and Documentary Film Festival of Kerala held in June last, Saanjh (Jasmine Kaur, National Award for Best film on Family Welfare)), Dhin Tak Dha (Shraddha Pasi), Shyam Raat Seher (Arunima Sharma, Best Cinematography National Award and PIFF), Echoes of Silence (Reema Borah, National Award Best Music), Punah (Ganga Mukhi), Hazy Grey Skies (Priya Belliappa), Rain Drops on a Tin Roof (Neelanjana Borthakur), The Solitary Sandpiper (Ajita Suchitraveera), Shankarnama (Tanushree Das/Saurabh Shankar) and so on.

 

Some of the films selected for screening such as Kramasha (Amit Dutta), Spandan (Shailesh Dupare), Undertakers (Emmanuel Palo) are considered as classic FTII films now. Apart from films made in Hindi and English, this section also highlights some of the best films made in other Indian languages for example, Kaatal (Marathi, Vikrant Pawar), Ekti Kaktaliyo Golpo (Bengali, Tathagat Singha) and Vadhakramam (K. M. Kamal).

 

This section also includes works by some students who have made a mark as professional filmmakers in the Indian entertainment industry. This category includes Three of Us and Gaarud by Umesh Kulkarni who after passing from the Institute, has made three feature films in Marathi including one for ABCL. Also, When This Man Dies by Arun Sukumar who has recently directed a commercial Hindi film for Rajshri Productions. These films, again in 35mm format, will be screened with a package of 5 to 8 films daily at 2.00 p. m. from 22nd to 30th November at Maquinez Palance-II in the main IFFI complex.
