“I make films for festivals” - Ingrid Veninger

New Delhi: November 26,2012

Two directors of World Cinema – one from Mauritius and the other from Canada made a candid confession that they make films because of passion and addiction. Addressing a press conference at ‘Meet the Directors – World Cinema’ section at the 43rd International Film Festival of India in Panaji, Goa today, the Director of the film ‘The Children of Troumaron’ Harrikrishna Anenden from Mauritius said he is addicted to film making like a ‘drug addict’ and is not bothered about the film’s commercial success. Harrikrishna Anenden admitted that he has made the film with non-professional actors. He said he is inspired by the Indian film maestro Satyajit Ray and his land-mark film ‘Pather Panchali’. Stating that as Mauritius doesn’t have proper facilities, he has to fall upon European countries for post production job.

The French-Creole film ‘The Children of Troumaron’ by Harrikrishna Anenden is set in Troumaron, an impoverished area of Port-Louis, the capital of Mauritius. Four youngsters fight for their survival : Sadiq, the would-be poet, Eve, who prostituted herself as a child to obtain school materials, Clelio filled with his anger against the world, and Savita, ‘the good girl’ who wants to escape but finds all avenue are closed. Eve has a plan for her and Savita to get away. But it goes terribly awry, and the tragic consequences lead them into a spiral of violence.

The Director of the film ‘ I am A Good Person/ I am A Bad Person ‘ Ingrid Veninger said that she makes films only for film festivals. Since she started her career as a child artiste and has acted in a number of films she knows the intricacies of film making. She said she makes films out of passion and each film is made for a different reason.

Veninger stars in her won black comedy ‘ I am A Good Person/ I am A Bad Person ‘ as Ruby White, an indie filmmaker trying to promote her latest project in Europe. Ruby’s 18-year-old daughter Sara (played by Hallie Switzer, the director’s real-life daughter) has tagged along for the ride, but their respective anxieties lead them to clash and eventually go their separate ways. The film ‘ I am A Good Person/ I am A Bad Person’ -Veninger’s third feature - premiered at TIFF and earned kudos for blending the poignancy of a mother-daughter drama with a sharp satire of the independent filmmaking process.
