IIT Bombay to COLING 2012 International Conference from December 8.

Mumbai: December 4,2012

Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB), will be hosting COLING 2012, the 24th International Conference on Computational Linguistics at the institute from 8-15 December 2012. The conference is held biennially at different parts of the world and is known for bringing together top computer scientists, translation researchers, search engine researchers and linguists from academia and industry to discuss recent developments in language technology. It is organized under the umbrella of International Committee on Computational Linguistics (ICCL). This is the first that the conference will be taking place in India.

Recent times have witnessed the rise of the web which has proved to be the main mode of communication across countries. There has also been a need to “make sense of the web”.  The vast amount of electronic information needs automatic means of processing. This endeavour is called “Natural Language Processing” or “Computational Linguistics”.  The goal of this field is to make computers understand and produce language. It is a branch of artificial intelligence.

“COLING 2012 is an excellent opportunity for India's Natural Language Processing Research and Development, which in turn, is of great importance to the country's education, economy and communication”, said Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharya the organizing chair of the conference.

The first COLING conference was held in New York, 1965. The last five  conferences were held in Taipei, Geneva, Sydney, Manchester and Beijing

The attendees- numbering about 800- for this prestigious event will be from all over the world. The number of submissions had exceeded 1000, and about 25% high quality papers have been accepted for oral, poster and demo presentations.
