Gateway to Central Government communication

·         Press Information Bureau (PIB) is the nodal agency of the Government of India to disseminate information to the print, electronic and new media on government plans, policies, programme initiatives and achievements. It is also the Government's nodal agency to facilitate private media.

Authenticity

·         PIB is the authorized channel of the Government for information dissemination

National wide network

·         Set up in 1919 as a small Cell, the Press Information Bureau has now grown into a nationwide network of eight Regional Offices and 34 Branch Offices.

Wide reach

·         Information material released in English, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Gujarati, Sindhi, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Bengali, Nepali,  Assamese, Oriya, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and  Malayalam

Mode of information dissemination

·         PIB disseminates information through different modes of communication, such as Press Releases, Press Notes, Feature Articles, Backgrounders, Press Briefings, Photographs, Press Conferences, Interviews, Database available on Bureau's website, Press tours, etc. The information material released in English, Hindi, Urdu and 13 other regional languages reaches about 8,400 newspapers and media organizations.

Modern means of communication

·         For faster dissemination and wider reach, PIB uses modern means of communication like e-releases, dispatch of information through e-mail, tele-conferening, video conferencing etc, besides conventional means of fax and hand delivery.

Media feedback

·         Functioning as an interface between the Government and the media, PIB also provides feedback to the Government with people's reactions as reflected in the media.

PIB Mumbai

 

PIB Mumbai functions as the Regional Office for the Western Region with Branch Offices at Pune, Nagpur, Nanded (all in Maharashtra), Ahmedabad and Rajkot (in Gujarat) and Panaji (in Goa).   It is headed by Deputy Director General (Western Region).  The day to day operations are looked after by Director (Media & Communication).

 

PIB Mumbai offers info-media services in Marathi, English, Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu and Sindhi. The Mumbai office issues news releases about important Central Government programmes and policies to print, electronic and new media operating in Maharashtra.

 

Besides, it also coordinates media activities of Central Government and Central Government funded institutions located in Mumbai metropolitan area.  The activities include coordination of press meets, press tours, clipping service and media feedback. The Media Officers also perform media advisory functions, as Members of Media Coordination Committees of various organizations.

 

PIB  Mumbai Features Unit release large number of News Features on topical issues in Marathi, which find high degree of acceptance in several small and medium language newspapers. Important features are also released in English, Hindi, Urdu and Sindhi.

 

PIB Mumbai in collaboration with its Branch Offices and other Media Units of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, organizes Public Information Campaigns, to highlight people oriented initiatives taken by the Government. Workshops, lectures, symposia etc. are organized as part of the five day Public Information Campaigns, which are held at District or Sub Divisional places. An info - exhibition, publicizing various schemes of Government is also put up in collaboration with the implementing agencies of Central and State Governments.

 

During 2006-07, in Maharashtra, Public Information Campaigns were held in Karad, Rahuri (District Ahmednagar), Vasmat, (District Hingoli), Bhandara, Nandurbar and Shirpur (District Dhule). Public Information Campaigns during 2007-08 are scheduled at Buldhana, Washim, Chandrapur, Yavatmal, Jalgaon, Thane, Amaravati, Akola and Mumbai.

 

PIB Mumbai also coordinates media publicity of the International Film Festival of India, Goa and Mumbai International Film Festival.

 

Besides the Central Government Departments, PIB Mumbai is actively associated with the Office of the Principal Accountant General, Maharashtra, Textile Commissioner, IIT, Mumbai, University of Mumbai, Nehru Science Centre, Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai Port Trust,  BARC, Khadi & Village Industries Commission, Prasar Bharati (AIR & Doordarshan), NFDC, Films Division, Ali Yavar Jung Institute for Hearing Handicapped, All India Bankers' Association, Central Railways, Western Railways, Public Sector Oil companies etc.  It is also an active participant in media activities organized by industry associations like Assocham, FICCI ,CII and Association of Indian Industries.
